Dan Star K.C. has expertise in administrative law, regulatory litigation, commercial disputes and Royal Commissions and other inquiries. He also accepts appointments to act as a Mediator.
Dan acts both for and against Commonwealth and State Ministers, departments and agencies in public law and other litigation. He has particular expertise in investigations and litigation with regulators in civil penalty litigation. Dan also appears in proceedings between private parties.
Dan’s practice is broad. In addition to trials or appeals in the Federal Court and the Supreme Court, he appears in Royal Commissions and Boards of Inquiries. His experience includes the Yoorrook Justice Commission (2023–2024), the COVID-19 Hotel Quarantine Inquiry (2020) and the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System (2019–2020).
Dan is an AMDRAS Accredited Mediator and is available to be briefed as a mediator in any civil or commercial litigation proceedings.
Dan is the Chair of the Victorian Bar’s Human Rights Committee.
Before coming to the Bar in 1998, Dan was an associate to the former Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia, the Hon Michael Black AC KC.
Dan holds a first class honours degree in law from the University of Melbourne.
